AZ desert mulies post rut
Fri, 01/20/2012 - 19:03
Howdy. I've been reading stuff on this site for a while now and decided to make it official. This is my first forum post, but I did put in a gear review the other day. Apologies if it was too bold to start off that way. I read other forums sometimes, but this is the first one I've joined. I did it in the spirit of sharing information with other folks with similar interests. My wife, kids, and I are visiting family in AZ next week. I am lucky enough to get there a few days early and chase some OTC archery mule deer. Anybody willing to share what they think the deer will be doing? I've been pouring over maps and satellite images, but have never been there. My brother is coming along and it is his first bowhunt. It's my first out of state hunt. I am a meat hunter first, so seeing deer is more important to me than finding the next world record. I expect to spend our limited time in 36B, but am open to suggestions. Packing out meat will be a new test for my ultralight equipment, but want to see how it does before spending any money on a new pack. We'll see about getting a deer first, hey? |

Elmcreek.... I'm heading to Az next week myself and I was told the bucks are still running a few does in the 19B area . If your hunting meat I dont think it'll be a problem finding a good meat buck this time of year . As everywhere else in the country the rut ran a little late especially here in NM .
Good Luck and keep us posted !

Thanks for the reply. I figured they'd be done chasing does, maybe they'll be moving a little more than I thought they would. Good luck to you too.

unit 36 should be good for deer. I was down that way the beginning of the month and was within shooting distance of 3 good bucks. I only had a javi tag so they were safe with me. Packing should not be a problem since a lot of the deer are within easy walking distance of the dirt roads in the flats.
New phone. lost all my contact number. need your number again?
Thanks to everybody that replied, but we struck out. I only had two and half days to spend before I was supposed to meet my wife and children at the airport in Phoenix. Found a coues doe in hilly country and tracks at a couple water holes, but no mulie bucks. Thought I would have a good chance at a tank that's off the road a bit, but saw nothing the only afternoon I had to sit there. Good news is I got to put alot of miles on in new country and spend some time with my Dad and brother. Better yet, the tag is still good and we're planning to try again in December. Starting a new bino fund and accepting donations now... Thanks again, now looking forward to turkey season.
