Got another DIY public land hog

Probably the toughest sow I've ever whacked. Patterned her and another sow that were showing up on my trail camera at the same early AM times. Twenty-one yard shot, only went about 30 yards, but she still had some life in her so I added a second arrow to end it. Of course, I was by myself so the drag-out was murder. Her hide was super-tough, made skinning a pain in the butt. Not the largest, but a public land pig - should be tasty. |

What ranch did you shoot her at? I live in socal and looking for some spots to go out and get my feet wet. Only been hunting once in my life and needless to say it sucked...LOL.

Thank you wild1. Hey I have a question... I was wondering when it comes to hunting these hogs what is a good distance to practice at and at how many pounds should my bow be set at? I know for deer an experience hunter wrote that he would not take a deer further than 30yards even though he could kill one at about 40-45 yards. What are your thoughts since you have real experience hunting these bad boys?
I am a short stocky guy with a draw at about 26.5 and am unsure what to set my bow at as far as draw weight. Looking at getting the PSE Rally as my first set up.

With regard to draw weight and shooting distance, most bow hunters will tell you the same thing: whatever you do, make sure you are confident and capable of making an ethical, quick kill and your arrow goes where you intended it to go. Obviously, the closer the better, and many think a faster arrow is better and closer is better, all gets trumped on arrow placement though - nothing happens unless the arrow hits where it's supposed to (the vitals). Shoot and practice, be capable and confident, then go into the field and be a ethical hunter. For myself, I usually won't shoot outside of 40 yards, but I have made some good shots out to 50. My draw weight is 67 lbs., but again, whatever you're capable and confident with. Good luck!!
Thanks for the reply. Yes... I will not go out hunting until I can put arrows where I aim and at a distance I know that arrow will take them down. I just wanted an idea of where to start at and get going on the practice side of things. Thanks again for your input.
