Local D-zone buck down!!!
After some close calls Saturday we were back at it again Sunday morning again with all the pumpkin patch(rifle hunters). I glassed up this buck right at around 7:30am...close to 2 miles away...We watched him hoping he would bed down....he did!!! At that distance and lookin toward the sun we couldnt get a good look at him but we knew he was a good buck by his frame....
I was on my way....I got to my pre determined spot and settled in....the show case show down commenced....it was about 9:30am. I could not see him but I knew he was somewhere in the little cut below me. Eric Welshwas still on top with the 15s keeping a eye on the buck....I kept glassing back up at him hoping to see him signal the buck was up... never happened....At 1:00 pm I stood slowly....my legs were killing me I had to stretch out....I glasses everything below me hoping to see him....at this point my mind is wondering...did he sneak out the bottom?...was he even in here?...where is he?.....should I try moving closer maybe?....
Then it happened....I seen somthing...it was him...he was up! I could just see his back, he was pawing at the ground! I ranged the bush he was at....30.8 yards.....wow..I was close! I sat back down for another 20 min...my mind was racing....I knew I wouldnt have a shot when I stood again....there was one more bush...10 yards closer where I knew if I could get to I would have a really good chance at having a open shot....but...that would put me right at 20 yards.....was it worth chancing it....I sat back down and took a moment and prayed again..asking God to guide me and help me with this. In so....we were makin a move....when a gust of wind came up...I moved...We did it...we made it to the bush.... 22 yards!!! I sat on my knees arrow knocked....release hooked up....the wait continued.... I could see his left side and the top of his head....he stated moving his head a little more....ears moving a little more..was he going to stand? Then it happened...anyone that has hunted a deer beded know what Im talking about when you see the head just drop down real quick.....he is getting up....then his back end came up.....then there he stood...oblivious to his surroundings....I was already at full draw when I seen his head drop....I settled the 20 pin on him and sent it on it way....it was done.
He took a few steps down into the bottom and just stood....not knowin what just happened...I glassed him up looking for blood....no blood....NO I though...then it was all about trying to get another arrow in him..I knocked another arrow...38.6 yards....I was a mess at this point...I stood drew put the 40 pin and sent it....way back in the the hams...great.... he took off running!!!!...I was disapointed in myself...40 yard chip shot and I probably just pushed him now!!! I watched as he ran about 10 yards...and slowed to a slow walk again....I knew he was hurtin at this point....I walked back to where I left my back drank a bunch of much need water....put my shoes on and just sat a bit. I said a quick prayer and went in.
There was my arrow....covered in blood...blood all over the bush it hit....the first arrow was good....just had to be good....but there was LITTLE blood...I was mainly following his tracks...arrow knocked...ready...I went about 80 yards and looked up....there he was...I could see the tops of his horns!!!!
It was done...
Eric, was already on his was around to me so he didnt get to see it all go down....I made the call to him and said it was done....I think he response was somthing along the lines of "dont f-in lie to me!" He made the long hike in and we hugged and celebrated...then went to work...We found why he never bled....there was atleast 1 inch of fat all over this buck was unreal...all that fat sealed him up tight!!! It was now pushin 3:30 pm...Eric was suppose to be home at noon....wrut wro....with the chores done we packed up and head out on our 1-1.5 miles out....coming out HEAVY!!!!(thank you Katrina for letting me play with Eric a little later then expected)
There are maybe 2 other people that I get to call friends Dave Nicholsonand Eric Welsh that might truly know how much this means to me...other then that God himself only knows how bad I wanted this and how hard Ive worked to do this with a bow....may all the glory go to God! He is good!
This was a local D zone right here in So.Cal. with rifle hunters all around...it was all DIY...PUBLIC LAND! It is a ton of hard work...but the reward is unreal! Thank you for letting me share this with you all...it has been a long hard journey!
I want to say thank you to my beautiful wife Ashlee Oldenkamp....for understanding what bowhunting is to me...I know it can be tough at times but you always wish me good luck and kiss me good bye and greet me with a hug and a kiss!...thank you babe! I love you!
