How would this be unethical? If the Bear season falls during the time that they will start hibernating, then how else would they expect you to kill it? personally Im not stupid enough to do what he did. He is an idiot!
But I give him props for having the balls to do it. I wonder how he even walks with those huge things in his pants. lol
There is nothing wrong with what he did.

Hahaha! Just read your response. So true!
Here is the ONLY thing that I think may get this guy into trouble, and I quote...
'He told the paper that he could barely see the bear's nose before turning on his flashlight. About six feet into the cave, he said he could hear the bear growling at him. But when the bear pulled its ears back, Kendall knew that was his only chance to fire.'
If he had his flashlight on (which sounds like he did) when he fired his weapon they may cite him for artificial light and may take away the kill. Makes the story very interesting!

That might happen.
Rule #8 in the CO Big Game Rules and Regulations "It's against the law to:" (Page 5):
It is unlawful to use artificial light as an aid in hunting wildlife.
We'll see what happens.
Now they want to ban this type of hunting.
Listen, if a hunter is that nuckin futz to go into a bear den and shoot one (without using a light) then go for it.
Not sure I would do what he did unless I had already wounded the bear and needed to finish the animal. Good God, who was out winning the Nobel Prize if he was crawling in caves after bear? More than just a few bricks shy! But the kid has balls big as church bells!
What really pissed me off was reading the chain after Eriks response. Ignorant, uneducated, holier than thou, tofu munchin, long haired, hippie type quasi commie socialistic ass with ears people really piss me off! I hope their effin dog dies!
And hunting is only for survival?? Nimrods like that are so ignorant that they don't realize that hunters do more for conservation than anyone else. Just last year, what I paid for in hunting license, guide license, dove and duck stamps, tags, all kinds of gear, not to mention the actual time I SPENT volunteering on conservation projects is just a hair more that his paying his annual membership to the Sierra Club. Freakin oxeygen thieves just kill me!!

Looks like there has definitely some follow up.
The Colorado Wildlife Commission on Thursday is set to begin consideration of a new regulation banning the killing of a bear in its den.
The Colorado Division of Wildlife has drafted a proposed regulation that will make it illegal to "hunt, take or harass a bear in its den."
If approved, the regulation would go into effect July 1.
The proposed regulation stems from a November killing of what could have been a record-sized 703-pound black bear.
Craig hunter Richard Kendall told the Craig Daily Press in December that he was exploring a small cave near Meeker when he saw the bear then decided to shoot and kill it in its den.

So, did they give him the record? I believe that he should get it unless the flashlight is deamed illegal, but it sounds like that was the only way this guy could get a light bulb to come on! I mean seriously, Crawling in a dark cave with a bear!?? I wouldnt want to be the guy to tell him he doesnt get the record!

I think it was Bubba. No, wait, that was a javelina. Or was it the mountain lion? Well if it wasnt him Im sure he has done it a time or two. He is not the kind of guy to shoot one in a cave, just crazy enough to go in after them.
