Western Wyoming Mule Deer advice.
Mon, 06/25/2012 - 16:54
I will be guiding elk hunters in Wyoming, the Cody area at the beginning of October. As part of my payment the outfitter is letting me hunt Muleys the week before which is the last week of September. I know nothing about the Muleys in that area. Any help will be much appreciated!!! |

I have never hunted the Cody area but often hunt an area that is very similar. The bucks will be shedding the velvet about that time and usually within a few days of shedding the bachelor groups break up and the bucks drop out of the high open basins and move into the timber so finding them gets much harder. I would set my focus a little off the tops of the mountains. Small avalanch chutes with timber on both sides and good excape routs would be a good bet. There is a chance some bucks hold on the high basins a little longer depending on hunting pressure but it won't be for long. Once the velvet is shed and the hunting pressure starts The older bucks stay pretty tight to the timber. Of course every area is a little different but that is what happens and what works for me in the area of Wyoming I hunt. I hope that helps a little. You will have a great hunt in a great area. Good luck!
