Having gone from a single pin to a 7 pin site (7 deadly pins)...

What are you all setting up as yardage?  With 7 I am tempted to tighten up the intervals..ie...20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 50, 60...etc.

Any experience here?  I shoot a fast bow, so the difference at 25 vs. 30 has been pretty minimal, and I'd be pretty nervous shooting at anything outside of 40 or so yards...but one never knows and elk can certainly tempt.  I believe in ethical shots, so I'm not looking to shoot elk at 60..but there ARE follow up shots from time to time!

Just curious what to do with all the options!

If anything I would set your odd yardages past 50 yds, especially with a fast bow 20-30,30-40 your pins are already going to close together, the only place that I think you could fit an odd yardage in would be past 50.

That is what I was concerned with.  And to be frank, these eyes are starting to slip.  I went with .29 pins to help see what the heck I'm looking at.

Thanks for the comments.

throw an Efffn grenade at those bad boys, 1" 1 1/8" will not make that much difference in my opinion!  who cares if u have 7 pins even if they are 5.0 pins just shoot those b@Star*ds and try to hity them in the boiler maker!

You got a good chuckle out of me on that one.  BUT you're point is well taken.  How far was the grenade you threw at the Oryx?  Nice by the way.

I have the SDP7 as well and all of my yardages are 20,30,40,50,60,70,80 even past 50 the gaps are even, from 70 to 80 the gap a tad wider... and just cause you have the 80 pin doesnt mean you are unethical in any way IMO. In fact you are probably more ethical because if you are confident at that yardage you can hold dead on rather than a holdover guess. Of course the greatest challenge and reward is getting as close as possible to the game. My bow shoots right around 300 and if I set at odd increments I would have virtually no pin gap.

Thanks to all who replied...dblclucker sealed the deal...sounds like evey 10 is the magic number.  It sure as hell is a whole differnt game than the single pin site I've gotten along with which was fine..but the obsession never really lets up does it!

On to using the damn thing now.

Depending on the speed of your bow you can set that sight up to 100 yards, maybe further.  My hunting bow is a little slower than my target bow so I set the top of the bubble @ 90 yards and then the rest of the pins @ 10 yard increments down to 20.  On my target bow I've got a little more room so I set the top of the bubble @ 100 yards, the lowest pin to 80 and so on. For a 90 yard shot I just split the bottom pin and the bubble. When doing this,  you have to set the bubble first and then the other pins instead of starting with the top pin. An unethical shot is one you aren't capable of making consistantly. If you make an 80 yard shot into your block 20 times a day, under the right conditions is that unethical in the field?  If you don't practice regularly, a 30 yard shot could be considered unethical.  I know it's a late response but I've been busy.

I have a single pin sight, but I have a friend that set's his, 5 pin at half yd's, like  22.5,  32.5,  42.5,  52.5, 62.5, he say's it's easier for him, with the even shot's. And it help's with the in between shot's.

That's a good way to do it, Vic. I set mine to ten yard increments. I shoot a fast bow, too so my 1st pin is for 10-20, second for 30... etc. I had it where I was using the 1st pin all the way out to 30, but I hate the tricks my mind plays on me when hunting. I like knowing I have a specified pin for 30 and one for 40. I have pins set up for all the way out to 70 yards. Makes my 10-40 yards shots like buttah!

Feedback...

Tried 20, 30, 40, the 5's all the way out to 60, but wanted more range...so I ended up with 20 to 80, 10 yard increments.  The bow's fast enough, and the sight ring is big enough, on that SDP Spot Hog to fit the pins.  Down by the bubble is 90.  So it works out.  90 still makes that target look small, but it's nice to have a reference for practice, if nothing more.  When you are inside 40 yards on an elk sized target, the whole dam sight is ELK anyway!

Good stuff.

I shoot a Mathews Heli-M and with my arrow and draw weight I'm close to 295 fps. I have a Toxonics 5 pin sight and I initially wanted to set it up for 20,30,40,50, and 60. What I have learned over the past week or so is that I can use my first pin for 10,15,25, and 30! At 10 yards I'm about 1.5 inches high and dead on at 30! Its insane! I use my second pin for 40-50 with only 1 inch drop within the 10 yards. At this point I may set up my 3rd for 60 but to be honest I'm not sure I would want to shoot out past 60 yards!!!

With all the replies I'm sure you have found what you needed!

Good luck!
